Day 7 - Walking Safari

Early up again this morning I woke up at 4:30am, we have to meet our Guide in the lobby for our walking safari today.  We aren't sure what to expect - the group of Richardson advisors that came a few years ago saw a Lion on their walking safari but I'm not sure what is right around the resort this time of year.  We only walk for about 90 mins so we can't get very far.

This will likely be the last night of the blog - we leave tomorrow morning to go to Zanzibar which is an island off the coast.  We won't be doing too much there and the last 3 mights is at a beach resort where there will be a whole lotta nothing being done.  Maybe I'll just do one overall post in Zanzibar just to post some ictures and memories - not sure.

We quickly just grabbed a croissant from the breakfast area and then went outside to meet the Guide and were introduced to Bernard (Guide) and Vicky and Benson (armed escorts)

Bernard explained that there were 5 golden rules - 1) Everyone walks single file with a Guard at the front and a Guard at the back. 2) Don’t run (if you act like prey you’ll be treated like prey) 3) speak quietly and silence phones I don’t know the last 2 and neither does Jay but I feel like the first 3 area likely the most important.

We got a LOT of information - I didn't take many photos because most of the animals were pretty far away but here is the info we got:

Buffalo - a single Buffalo is more dangerous than a few or a herd. Be very wary of single Buffalo because they’re always on their guard against predators and very aggressive.

Impala - there are essentially 2 Impala lifestyles, the bachelor and harem lifestyle.  The bachelors are working towards getitng a harem which would consist of up to 20 females, the most a male Impala will hold a harem for is for 21 days. During that 21 days their instinct is to mate as much as possible and watch for predators so don’t eat enough or get enough rest, which makes them easier to overthrow by another strong Impala who has been eating and resting and fighting rather than mating.

Dikdik - they mate for life so you'll always see them in pairs.  Their primary predator is Cheetah and if one of the pair is killed the other has a very small chance of survival and will often not run and sacrifice themselves as life isn't worth living without their mate.  Jay said " thank you for the story by the way. Set the expectation."

Zebra - What colour are Zebra?  Jay said white with black stripes, just to be contrary I said black with white stripes (I was right), how they know is they studied embryos and until 3 months gestation they're all black. Zebras migrate with Wildebeest but they're smarter - they have a good memory and when they come to the river crossing with the crocodiles during the Great Migration Zebras never cross first. They wait until crocodiles are full and not eating any more Wildebeest and then they cross.  Zebra also always look healthy with full belly, even in dry season, but it can be bloating. So way to tell if they're healthy is by hair on their neck.  If their mane is sticking straight up they're healthy, if it's laying flat they're not.

Wild basil - The Maasai use it like a cologne.  Bernard said the Maasai can smell like cow and if they want to see their girlfriend they will freshen up with wild basil.

Warthog - If a warthog sees a predator, like a lion, and it has young then the mother will fake an injury, walking with a limp to draw the predator to her.  But Warthog are fast, he said they called them a 12V engine and when the lion gets close they'll run really fast away.  They're also known for having stamina and can have sex for 20 mins.  They also walk with their tails up so that the young can follow the tail in long grass.

Elephant - African Elephants are not like their more gentle Asian Elephant brethren, they can be very aggressive especially if you don't heed the warning signs they'll give you before they charge.  An Elephant will tell you they're uncomfortable by flapping their ears, among other things.  They also communicate by Infrasonic Communication, an example is if a family of Elephant find a watering hole they will stomp their feet and the vibration can be heard up to 10km by another family of Elephants and they will make their way there if needed.  They're also very respectful of eachother.  If one family is at the watering hole and another family arrives they will wait until everyone is done before proceeding to drink. Elephant tusks were being poached and so in South Africa there were a number of baby Elephants born without tusks over several years so the government stepped in and got aggressive on poaching because they didn't want this to become a new birth adaptation because Elephant do need their tusks in the wild to help them survive.  Elephants have no natural predators, Lions will go after a baby but not a full grown Elephant.

Termites - The Queen can be 5cm she lays 30,000 eggs a day - termites don’t make sound, they communicate by chemical pheromones. Their nests can either be underground or above ground in towers and if you're lost in the Serengeti most above ground termite towers are built facing West so you can find your direction by using the mound.

You have to remember that when you are doing a walking safari you are not watching the animals, the animals are watching you.  When you are in a car the animals just see a large moving box, the scents are masked by diesel and so the animals might be curious but they don't see you as a threat within the vehicle, he said sometimes Lion will even come right up to the vehicle and rub on it and lay in the shade (and we told him that happened to us yesterday).

Dung Beetles - the Beetle who wins the female is the one who has the biggest balls.  He repeated this phrase a couple of times before we realized he meant dung balls.  The male is the workhorse in the relationship, creating dung balls for up to 60 eggs to be laid in a season.  Fresh dung is the best and they can scent it within seconds.  They never use the dung from a predator because it contains so much bacteria from the blood and meat it eats so only grass eating animals.

That was pretty much the tour, I might have missed a few things but it was very informative!

When we got back we all had a quick shower because even though we only walked for 90 mins it was starting to get hot.  Mom and I went down to the pool area to sit on a lounger under an umbrella and read around 9:30am and met Jay down there for lunch about noon when the breeze let up and it started to get too hot, even in the shade.

As we were sitting for lunch Abraham found us to let us know that our flight tomorrow to Zanzibar was delayed by an hour so we don't have to leave at 8am we'll leave at 9am instead.  It's an hour drive to the airport from here and they want us there an hour in advance of our flight.  It will be interesting to see what kind of aircraft it is, I feel like it might be the smallest airplane we've ever been on and we flew on a 20 seater from Male to the island in the Maldives were our hotel was.

At lunch I got a mocktail (Strawberry puree, vanilla syrup, lemonade and lime) that was really good and added tequila to it which made it scrumptious (synonym #4), and asked for extra tequila and that made it even more luscious (that one seems like a stretch but the definition is spot on (of food or drink) having a pleasingly rich, sweet taste.)

Jay asked how long we thought he would make it in the wild if he just left the hotel, started walking and kept on going.  He figured he'd last at least through the first night. lol

Now we're back in the room, it's 3:30pm.  I doom scrolled for entirely too long and decided to write up the blog before switching back to reading my book. We relaxed until dinner and went for a drink around 6pm then headed up to the restaurant. Jay and I both got steak rare that was more like blue but was still good, it came with the fries with Parmesan and truffle mayo. Mom had the same pizza as last night but announced it in such a way that I was like “you had that last night”. “I did?”  “Well it was good and you liked it so that’s good”. She had had 2 beer at happy hour and a HUGE glass of champagne with dinner (at least 2 glasses worth).

Day 6 - Central Serengeti, Four Seasons Serengeti

As ALWAYS there are things I forgot from yesterday that pop into my head at random times today.

Yesterday Mom was wearing the shirt she usually sleeps in, because it's soft, but it had just been cleaned so she put it on for the long travel day tomorrow - not remembering at the time that it says NEW YORK across the chest.  She didn't want anyone to think she was American (not that there's anything wrong with that) so she didn't take off her long sleeve sweater at lunch (and it was hot out) and when we got to the hotel and were awaiting our rooms and it was even hotter she took it off and wrapped it around her shoulders to cover the wording.  Finally I said "why don't you just go and turn it inside out?"  So she did, even though now the printed tag with size was showing..better than overheating.

We were talking about the Tented Lodge and she was cold at night, but the duvet was thick and I was hot the first night and comfortable the second night in my shorts and a T-shirt to sleep.  She said that she sleeps on the left side of the bed..I said "no you don't, you sleep on the right side of the bed".  She said I sleep by the window "right, which is the right side of the bed" she looks at me like I'm crazy and says "it's the left side of the bed".  "Where are you measuring from, looking at the bed from the foot of it?  You sleep on the right side"..she measures it from laying down looking at the ceiling and she's on the left side of the bed.  Which way would you do that?  I sleep on the left side of the bed (looking at it from standing at the foot) unless we're in a hotel then I sleep on whatever side is closest to the bathroom, lol.

At dinner Mom got an Ocular Migraine, she doesn't get a headache but sees stars in her peripheral vision and said she had a little bit of nausea when she went to the washroom but by the time she sat down it was gone.  The nausea she remembered because I said that Paige had a visual migraine once, she saw bright spots, was light sensitive and nauseous but it only happened once and never happened again a few years ago.

When I got back to the room Jay was doing the course and I finished up the blog and got ready for bed.  When I was ready to go to bed bed I was trying to figure out how to turn off the up lighting around the room and the only switch that I could find that would do it was the master switch, but that also left Jay in the dark in the closet.  So while I tried to figure that out I turned the lights on and off on him a few times (he's on video) and finally turned it back on and slept with the lights on.

The beds are pretty, they have the netting around them, but we aren't sure we need them so pulled them back a bit to let air flow better.

I woke up at 4:30am, used the washroom - I had 2 glasses of really tasty (synonym for delicious #1) South African Chardonnay with dinner, I checked the time on my phone and noticed that it wasn't charging so then I futsed around with that a little bit and then was awake.  So I read my book for 2 hours until it was time to get up.  You definitely need the netting down - there were a few little beetles in the room and as soon as I turned my book on they were attracted to the light - one landed on me so I flicked it off the bed and closed the curtain, then I could hear it continually hitting the curtain for the next hour.

I got dressed this morning and realized I'm Lulu on Safari..the other ladies we have seen here leaving for safari this morning one I'm pretty sure her jumpsuit was silk, her hair was blown out and her boots were designer black leather.

As Jay was leaving the room to go to breakfast he said "I guess I don't need my phone, it's not like I'm taking pictures".  My iPhone 17 was the best decision, Jay has a 14 and Mom has a 13 and their pictures aren't nearly as crisp especially with zoom.  Jay and I went down for breakfast without Mom because her alarm didn't go off which I've heard is an issue with the most recent Apple iOS update.  I had a croissant with a little apricot jam and some fresh fruit (pineapple, papaya or mango (I can never tell them apart) and watermelon) and a decaf latte (the coffee is too strong with an Americano I end up adding a whole bunch of milk and then also sugar and its still almost not drinkable - not at this hotel specifically but the 2 Melia properties - I think tomorrow I'll get a cappuccino, there has to be a happy medium) but everything was delectable (synonym #2).  When Mom met us down there she said "I forgot my phone but it doesn't matter because I don't use it anyway".  I laughed and said "that's what Jay said!"

I like these fans in the lobby, it's hard to tell but they're on a rod and pulley system so they all move synchronized.  I'm not sure how much air they push but they're interesting.

We started driving and the story from the people yesterday came to mind and I told Jay - they were here 5 days and hadn't seen Elephants until the last day.  You could tell it wasn't going to be the same experience we've had so far.  We saw Giraffe, and then Buffalo, a Hyena and  lots of Zebras.

We drove for maybe 20 mins after that seeing nothing when Abraham stopped and got out his binoculars and said "See the elephants?" Jay said "Fuck no Abraham if I saw the elephants I would say “hey, look at all the elephants”".  We couldn't find a route to the herd of Elephants and so drove another while without seeing anything but Abraham is clearly moving with a destination in mind.  He said "someone said they saw Lions this way".  And holy cow - were there Lions!

A pride of about 14 Lions, some of them eating a recent kill.  3 male, 2 female and a whole bunch of young ones (did you know the young ones have spots in their coats?) and they had killed and mostly eaten an Elon.

The male lion (from the pictures earlier) wasn't with the females and the cubs so we went back.  He got really close, rubbed his balls all over the back of the car, peed on our tire and laid down in the shade of the truck, lol.

There were originally 3 male lions and we followed just one and then followed the pride until they relaxed under the tree so Abraham went in search of the original other 2 male lions.  He said that there is a bunch of buildings at the top of the hill where they looked like they were heading which is where hot air balloons launch from so we went that way.

As we were leaving the Lion pride all sorts of other trucks were arriving (4-5) and I said "So, how long did you wait before you radioed in that there was a Lion pride there?"  Abraham smirked and said "I waited until we were finished enjoying...you caught that, ah?"  Yes, and we appreciated it.

Jay turned to Abraham and said "Ok, this is a good day.  I know you were stretching when you started pointing out Hyrax and Buffalo.  You were trying, I know".

When we were driving back I added more sunblock (maybe the 3rd time in the 3 hours) and commented that lotion sunblock was the way to go anyway on this trip because you can't use spray in the car and you can't get out of the car.  I have a face sunscreen and a body sunscreen that are both 60.

Jay, jokingly, said to Abraham - "I'm Sick of seeing Lions I’d like to see more Wildebeest" and I added “said no one ever”.

As we were driving back Jay said "Oh look, there is an Eagle in that tree".  Abraham said "that's a vulture" and so I told Jay that he would be a terrible guide - although if his guidees weren't nature enthusiasts they may be writing in their blog that they saw Eagles, and they didn't even know that they had Eagles in Africa!

We saw 3 Cheetahs, they were on the move and I didn't get a good photo.

Then, we saw 5 active male lions that have likely been pushed out of the Pride. They're now travelling together and are probably about 6 years old.

We have seen a plethera of Zebra and Jay asked at one point if they're 'Zeebra' or 'Zeb-Ra' - Abraham pronounces it Zeb-ra - I said it's just a matter of pronunciation, it's the same as the difference between black bellied bustard and black bellied bastard.

On our way back when we got to where we saw the buffalo Jay said "this is where we saw the buffalo..this day almost went on the shelf of disappointment". But Abraham pulled through with the Lions and it can never be disappointing with so many Lions!

We also saw a solitary Elephant, he was very dark and Abraham said that's because of the soil where they are and what they're eating.

(here is another Hyena butt for your viewing pleasure).

I asked Abraham what the point of the giraffe horns are, they seem likely something that would have disappeared through evolutions - he said the males are made of bone and will be used to fight other males for dominance but the female horns don't serve any purpose and are more like wisps of hair than anything solid.

When we got back to the room the Four Seasons had left both some cord organizers, little leather with a dome closure and an etching of the logo, and several screen cleaning cloths (one for every electronic device we had left in the room, so I had one for my computer and Jay had one for his computer and one for his iPad.

After a shower we went down to the pool area for lunch,  I had a nice Quinoa and Beet salad and added shrimp to it and got the Simba's Pride drink which has Rum, Cointreau, Lime Juice and Tamarind in it, it was good and had a little spice.  Jay had a sip, made a face and said it was awful.  He drank 3 Dawa's which are made with a local spirit similar to gin, lime and simple syrup.  After lunch I had sorbet, I tried the coconut and the pineapple and I liked the coconut the best.

A couple times later today I had to remind myself that I had beet salad for lunch and I'm not, in fact, dying. IYKYK, sorry TMI but it's funny because I have these special antibiotics with me that we're only supposed to take if we have epic travel issues.

After lunch we went to the Tanzanite Store which is at the hotel, I LOVE Tanzanite, my original engagement ring was Tanzanite and for my 40th (or maybe 30th?) birthday Jay got me made a Tanzanite and Ruby infinity band ring (the stones wrap all the way around) and last year I had made a ring at Dana's Goldsmithing and it's stone is a Sapphire that is cornflower blue so that it LOOKS like a Tanzanite but is harder and stronger because my Tanzanite ring a few times the stones broke.  When I get a pc of jewellery I wear it ALL THE TIME.  I have a diamond pendant right now that is a circle.  I've been wearing it since the girls were born, it was my first mothers day present about 2 weeks after their birth.  I was looking for a pendant that I could put INSIDE that circle so that I didn't have to change that one and this pendant caught my eye.  Because we're staying 3 nights they have a 10% discount and so Jay went down while I was having a nap and got it for me.  I'll take a picture tomorrow of the 2 pendants together.

After my nap I still was tired so just read my book in bed.  Mom and I went down to have a drink on the patio at 6pm, Jay joined us about 6:40pm and we went to dinner around 7:20pm to the main restaurant. Mom and I shared a spicy chicken pizza with onion, avocado and a jalepeno aoili on it (Jay had the same but to himself) and ordered some fries with parmesan and a truffle mayo to share.  It was toothsome (I swear it's a synonym, you can look it up).

Tomorrow morning we have our walking guided safari at 6:30am so it's time for bed (it's 9, lol).  Everything is charging and I've double checked it and hoping I get a good night sleep!
