Travel to Split

Jay got up early this morning with the plan to work out with Mark.  I heard him leave when the door closed at 7:30am but didn't wake up until he came back a little after 8:25.  I asked if he met Mark there and he said "No, Mark didn't show up"...did you text him?  "No, why would I text him, the plan was to go to the gym at 7:30".  Mark texted a few minutes later and said 'what happened to going to the gym this morning?'.  I made sure to text him before we went up for breakfast at 9:00am (even though that was the plan) so he didn't feel left out.

We are catching the 11:30am ferry from Hvar to our next destination, Split.  Its a different ferry port, Stari Grad, which is only about 25 minutes from Hvar Town.  So we checked out at 10am and got on the road.  Jay wanted to make sure we had lots of time in case it was a small ferry again because the next ferry wasn't until 1:30pm.  Its a 2 hour ferry ride and the owner of the apartment we're staying in in Split had messaged me yesterday on AirBNB that she had had a last minute cancellation so we could come and check in whenever we wanted.  The goal was to meet her just after disembarking at 1:30.

We got on our way and headed out of Hvar Town.  Somewhere along the way Mark asked me to remove the fingerprint lock off his phone and the passcode lock, the fingerprint "doesn't work" and the passcode lock is a pain!  I called it. 1 day I think is all it lasted!

We got to the ferry terminal and bought our tickets quickly.  We had about an hour to kill so sat at an outdoor cafe and had a coffee and some water while we waited.  This is the first place we've come across where you had to pay to use the washroom, so I paid 5kn (10 cents) to go to the washroom and then went back to report to Mark that they were quite clean.  Mark said he was going to use the washroom as well before we got on the ferry (the last ferry bathroom I walked into and immediately turned around and walked back out - it was just a hole in the floor) so I gave him 5kn and he said "Thanks, save me the horror of the ferry bathroom".

Mark somehow always chooses THE worst moment to do something.  As soon as he left for the washroom we can see the first row of cars start to move towards the ferry so Jay and I go to the car and board the ferry when its our turn.  We told the guy who took the tickets that our other person was using the washroom and he let Mark on when he walked on a few minutes later.

We found a place on the outside deck where there were 4 seats in the shade.  After about 40 minutes Jay wanted to have a nap but looked so uncomfortable sitting in the chair so I suggested he go down and have a nap in the car.  Mark and I sat and chatted for about another 30 minutes, and by this time the sun had moved and only our faces were in the shade on the chairs so I decided I would go down to the lounge while Mark spread out across the 4 seats in the sun and had a nap.  The lounge was really nice, I had a leather banquet with a little table all to myself, nice comfortable couch...the boys should have come to the lounge.  As the ferry pulls into Split I went up to the top deck to see if Mark was there, but he wasn't so I went down to the car.  It wasn't until I got in the car with Jay that I realized Mark doesn't even know where we parked - and this was a much bigger ferry, there were cars on the main deck but also in the hold.  I phoned him and let him know where to find us and he hopped in the car as we were ready to roll out.

Once we disembarked the ferry I asked Jay to find a place to pull over so that I can figure out how to get the address of the apartment into the GPS because its not taking the street name in any combination of the three words in it:

Setaliste Petra Preradovica 9 is the street address.  But Apple Maps is finding an address like this 5 hours away somewhere else in Croatia and I'm not sure what is wrong with my Google Maps but it says its offline (turns out I had cellular turned off for the app, I must usually only use it on wifi).  Anyway we drove up a little further and I asked Jay to pull over when he can so that we can ask someone directions.  The first two people I asked had no idea where it was, but then I realized about my Google Maps and it worked fine.  Ana, the apartment owner called because I had texted her that we couldn't find it, but by that time we were parked across the street.  So she showed us where to park in the complex and walked us over to her unit which is on the ground floor of a 4 floor building with 6 units in it.

This is our private terrace

And it has 3 bedrooms, a single and two kings.  Its about a 15 minute walk to where she says we can find nice restaurants and its almost 2:30 so I'm starving and getting cranky.  So we walk into town - right across from our apartment is a beach.

Behind this beach club you can see our apartment builing

A zoom in.  Lots of people in the water even though its freezing!

We walked the road right along the water which took us past the ferry port and all the gross, touristy pop up shops and it was hot and I was hungry so we finally just sat at a gross, touristy cafe and I ordered literally the first thing on the menu (a meat plate) and an orange juice because I needed some sugar and a water because I felt terrible.  Lunch was gross.  Before we decided to walk back home we thought we would walk up a little alley beside the gross, touristy restaurant and it opened up to this...of course.  I apologized to the boys later, but they said they were in the same boat, just not quite as crazy as I was.  Turns out we were one block away from Old Split.

We ended up walking back to this place for dinner.

And I'm pretty sure Mark said he was NOT going to eat gelato every day..and yet.  I've only had one so far this trip!  They do have good gelato, but its not as good as in Italy, so why bother.

After walking around a bit to walk off our gross, touristy lunch we walked back to the apartment, stopped on the way to pick up some bananas and yogurt for breakfast at the Tommy Market (a chain of grocery stores here) and when we got back Jay and Mark both napped for 2.5 hours!  We didn't leave again to go out for dinner until almost 8pm and walked back a different way so we didn't have to walk past the ferry terminal again.  On the way we passed 3 little kittens on a wall and people had left them little bits of food and water - they looked pretty thin, but I took a photo for the girls (Mom, show it to the girls please!)

We went back to the square and had dinner and then walked around Old Split a little bit.
