Self-Isolation - Day 3

Day 3 is looking a lot like Day 2 so far.

Got up this morning and decided to make chocolate chip cookies to take to Julia’s tonight.  Again, we are only seeing the Faust’s and Acorn’s since we were in Florida with them before the isolation took place, we are a family of 12 now.

Once I got through my check of the COVID-19 website, some work, some Facebook creeping and found a recipe online I realized that until I get my Costco order I don’t have any white sugar.  So I texted my neighbour, two doors down, Kerry Mitchell, and asked her if I could borrow a cup of sugar - just like the old days.  I offered her some eggs in return as I got some from Sarah yesterday but she didn’t need them, so we’ll take her back some cookies once they’re done.

We decided to take the ATV over to their place to porch pick up the sugar once Kerry texted me that she had left it out, something fun to do rather than drive over.  I guess we could walk too. Kerry says there used to be trails back at the back of each of our properties that they drove their dirt bikes on as kids - we just took the road.

Kerry gave me two cups of sugar just in case I need more.  The recipe, which I doubled, calls for 2 cups of white sugar but I always half the sugar anyway in most recipes so I just used the one.  It makes kinda light, fluffy, chocolate chip cookies.  I left the last batch in a little long, and that’s the batch I took the photo of so they’re a little brown but still soft inside.  I used dark and milk chocolate chips.

Once finished the girls and I hopped on the ATV again and dropped some cookies back to Kerry and her family.  We left them on the porch for them just as they had left the sugar for us.  I washed my hands, opened a new box of ziploc bags, didn’t place it on the counter while I filled it with cookies, placed it in the original bag she gave me the sugar in and sent it over.  The only reason I did that extra step is because some of her family is immune compromised.

Kobe was here doing some work for us today, some of our stone around the walk way sunk over the winter and so he dug them up, put more screenings, which Jay had delivered yesterday, under them and then put them back in place.  Jay came in and said “Well, Kobe is learning something”. I said “He doesn’t want to do manual labour?”  “Exactly”.  Kobe is such a good kid and a hard worker.  Jay did landscaping too through University and its come in handy and saved us a lot of money in landscaping costs since Jay has done a lot of ours himself over the years.  It serves as a win win since Kobe doesn’t have a friend isolating with him like the girls do so he’s totally bored and pissed that his friends are still all getting together and he’s stuck on his own.

How is it Thursday already?!?  We were supposed to be coming home today.  The Owner of the house we rented got back to me today, I had emailed him to let him know we left early and that we hope to return next March Break.  The house was great.  He said that if we rebook for next year he will give us a discount for the days that we were short because of leaving early.  I think that all of us would go back there, the house was great, it was walking distance to the water park which had lots to do and there was lots of space for everyone.  I sent a message out to the peeps to see if anyone wants me to ask him to hold next March Break for us with the discount as our deposit and see what they, and he, says.

In the news today - Canadian mortgage lenders have introduced deferred mortgage payments for up to 6 months if you qualify.  If you have lost your job, or have a significant reduction in income, due to the COVID-19 pandemic you can call to apply for up to 6 months relief.  Your interest still accrues during this time and your payments will be slightly higher once they start up again but you won’t have to make payments for up to 6 months on a case by case basis.

The government is also offering up to $900 bi-weekly in EI for a parent who has to stay home with children while schools are closed for up to 15 weeks for workers, including self-employed, who don’t qualify for paid sick leave or EI.

Trudeau did another news conference today, I missed it, but CBC news says that extraordinary measures to contain the virus could be in place for weeks or months.
He urged anyone who can to donate blood.  I’m a regular donor, but I can’t go because of the self-isolation.
He said that supports will be on the way for retirees who have seen a dramatic drop in their savings due to massive market disruptions - as of the last time I heard the market was down 30%.
There are now 803 cases in Canada.
Asylum seekers crossing into Canada at Roxham Rd in Quebec will be required to go into mandatory quarantine at a facility for 14 days upon arrival.
They’ve extended the income tax filing deadline to June 1st with tax payments not due until August 31st.

As of today Italy has surpassed China in total deaths, their cases are still on the rise - its 5:17pm and they have 5,322 new cases as of this time.

The girls played on the trampoline for like an hour before we left for the Faust’s today.

The big debate again, as this continues, knowing what we know and that there is so much that we don’t know..Jay thinks he is going to have to go to work at some point or start laying people off, which they absolutely do not want to have to do.  But, if he goes to work, client facing, we have no idea who he has seen, who they have seen and where they have been which puts us at risk and isn’t an acceptable risk to me.  I think this will be a moot point, because I think sometime before our remaining 11 days are up the government is likely to put us all on lockdown.  If everyone just goes about their business as usual this will be so much longer. This is why there are 4600+ new cases in the US today, twice as many as the day before.  But, its a conversation we are going to have to have as our self-isolation ends.  Tonight Sarah said that Jeff is home, he’s been up at a hunt camp up north for the week, and his company wants him at work - and I just said “If Jeff goes to work you’re out of the isolation group”, again, we have no idea who he is seeing and where they have been - Jeff has a house in Kincardine where he works, so he would just stay there once he’s gone to work and Sarah day he will not come home at all until this is all over.  But he has a place to go to, another home that his work pays for.  Having to potentially lay someone off has Jay totally stressed out.  They currently have one person rotating through the office each day to have a presence, but with Jay not client facing and not selling it will have a big impact.  Insurance companies and mortgage lenders are going to have to make some adjustments, like allowing policies and commitments to be docusigned.  Right now some of my docs can be docusigned but not all of them so I usually always sign face to face with clients but I have a couple of clients this week who I’m sending all the docs via email and having a phone conversation with them to get them all signed up so that we can get their mortgage finalized - they don’t close until June but I want them 100% completed from the lenders perspective so that if there are lay offs or anything like that the mortgages are done.  It doesn’t mean that they can’t go back and look at them again prior to closing, they could, but it makes it much less likely.

Off to bed to read and just shut my brain off for a bit.

Today’s numbers.

Day 6 - Tour of a local Island

I set my alarm for 8am today because Jay and I have booked a tour to a local island by speed boat and it leaves around 10am.  I wake up ever...
